To reach the goal of having face-to-face communication 100% of the time between deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing without barriers – We can use every communication method available without fear of losing any of them.
From: Jason Curry, CEO of sComm
Some of you may not know I have been profoundly deaf since birth. I even got a cochlear implant at age 32, but it didn’t help me at all. My goal in having the implant was to have complete ease of communication with everyone around me. I have interacted with thousands of hearing people in endless face-to-face conversational situations. 99% of them do not know sign language which is the case everywhere in the real world. The outcome of those conversations has been mostly frustrating because of the communication barriers between us. I would also at times bluff through the conversation with some head nodding and smiling because I didn’t want to upset the hearing person or push them away. I wanted to build a relationship. And yet we simply could not communicate in the same way as two hearing people or two deaf people are able to communicate with each other freely without barriers. There were misunderstandings and missing pieces of information for both of us. I needed a useful tool to be able to communicate all the time. That need unfolded into developing the UbiDuo.
There are ongoing discussions among the deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing community regarding when interpreters, video remote interpreters, or CART services fit into work, medical, educational, and social settings. These are all useful methods of communication and yet each has limitations. We still have a communication problem. To solve that problem, we need to talk about it openly. We need to use every communication method available.
What we are not being open about and talking about is the fact that an interpreter or CART writer simply cannot be available 100% of the time. We know it but we seem hesitant to say it out loud. Third party interpreting services are valuable, but they can not always be there when a deaf or hard of hearing person is interacting with a hearing person wanting and needing to have a meaningful discussion right on the spot. They are not there for the nonstop face-to-face conversations that happen minute by minute all day long. There is a solution for that which is the UbiDuo. Individuals within agencies and companies have been using the UbiDuo successfully now for over 10 years. Still, there seems to have been a concern that using the UbiDuo solution will make the other solutions go away. That is simply not the case. The more solutions: The more communication.
Team Inclusion and Promotion: Removing Bluffing, Anxiety, and Misunderstanding
Trust and Confidence are the keys to a healthy and positive relationship, especially in the work environment. Having barrier-free one-on-one communication leads to a more satisfying working relationship. In many cases, people who are hearing communicating independently with a person who is deaf without an interpreter is a first-time experience. However almost 99% of the time, an interpreter is not available. Although each person is willing to communicate, there are barriers and at times, tension. Each of us reacts differently and sometimes negatively which impacts the outcome of the relationship which we want and need to develop.
Using the UbiDuo 2, two people can have a face-to-face conversation at any given time at any part of the day. It can be as simple as smiling at each other, making healthy eye contact, or a pat on the arm at the end of a meeting or as involved as solving a very complicated issue with satisfaction from everyone present. The UbiDuo 2 being a part of the environment allows the parties to have that peace of mind knowing they can have a barrier-free conversation 100% of the time when the interpreter or CART writer is not available. That 100% understanding leads to increased trust and confidence without bluffing, anxiety, and misunderstanding which builds the relationship to the next level.
People who hear get unlimited communication access however that has been difficult to achieve for people who are deaf. Job interviews, doctor appointments, or office meetings generally need to be done face-face in person. The UbiDuo 2 allows people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or late-deafened to sit across from someone who is hearing at any time with unlimited communication access.
The UbiDuo 2 provides many of the benefits of face-to-face interaction between people who are deaf and hearing. It provides the same communication ease that comes between two people who are hearing who are talking or between two people who are deaf who are signing. With the UbiDuo 2, each person is communicating in the same mode with the other. Nothing replaces the ability for two people to sit across from each other and communicate directly without a third party. When that happens everyone benefits.
On a team: If the team is only able to communicate with the team member who is deaf when the interpreter is available, it disrupts the workflow of the team and limits the immediacy of information sharing. When one-on-one discussions and interactions become routine, it enables the person who is deaf to have the same opportunities for promotion as others in the workplace.
Sometimes people who are deaf are hesitant to use the UbiDuo 2 thinking that communication can only be accomplished with an interpreter. Few employers can sit an interpreter next to an employee who is deaf 100% of the time. Everyone benefits when there is the openness to utilize the interpreter, CART writer, and the UbiDuo 2. This completes the communication picture making communication available at all times.
Moving forward with total inclusion is the goal. What can each person do to communicate when an interpreter is not available 90% of the time? What is the solution for that? The UbiDuo 2 was designed for that sole purpose: To cover that gap of nonstop one-on-one interaction in the work environment with a simultaneous real-time solution.
The UbiDuo is being utilized in hospitals, police stations, government agencies, drivers license offices, courthouses, colleges, universities, sheriff offices, social security offices, welfare offices, and employers nationwide enabling nonstop 100% face-to-face interaction between deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people in endless situations without face-to-face communication barriers.
